Zurich Life UK chief executive Gary Shaughnessy is to take on a new role as the insurer’s global life chief executive.

Shaughnessy replaces Kristof Terryn who was appointed chief executive of general insurance in October.

He will take the position from 4 January.

The appointment means the insurer is seeking a new leader for its UK Life business.

A spokesman says an announcement will be made shortly.

Shaughnessy has led the UK life operation since June 2012, and took on the additional role of UK country head for Zurich in 2014.

He is also a board member of the Association of British Insurers, where he chairs the protection committee.

Zurich interim chief executive Tom De Swaan says: “Gary steps up to his new role having made a significant contribution across our UK business.

“He is a great leader with a wealth of industry experience which makes him perfectly suited for the role. The appointment demonstrates the strength of our internal talent pipeline.”

Shaughnessy was previously Fidelity’s UK defined contribution and retail managing director. He has also led Prudential Group as UK managing director for retail life and pensions, and M&G investments, where he was chief executive of UK retail.
