News that Skandia’s acquisition of Intrinsic had been codenamed Arizona has sent Wells Street Journal reporters with too much time on their hands scurrying to find an explanation.
Insiders suggest the choice of name holds no real significance, and a quick glance at an atlas suggests the town of Skandia, Michigan, is nearly 1,600 miles from Arizona City.
However, they also say such code names come in batches and if, hypothetically speaking of course, the firm was looking for another acquisition or two, related code names would be used.
When the Wells Street Journal thinks of Arizona, two things spring to mind: the Coen brothers’ classic 1980s comedy Raising Arizona and The Orb’s equally classic 1990s hit Little Fluffy Clouds, which includes the line “We lived in Arizona, and the skies always had little fluffy clouds in ’em”.
So, which route will the brightest minds Southampton has to offer take?
The Raising Arizona avenue could be the easier one, with stars Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter decent bets.
But a trek through The Orb’s back catalogue could be a more interesting direction of travel. Pomme Fritz (Meat ’N Veg) and Bang ’Er ’N Chips are two cryptonyms that might also do the job.
