Unum in disability initiative

UnumProvident is joining forces with Jobcentre Plus and the Employers Forum on Disability to launch a reference pack advising companies on employing the disabled.

The Knowledge – Disability Solutions for Employers puts the case for employing disabled people and gives information about legislation, how to make adjustments to accommodate disabled employees and how to gain access to Government funding.

Over one million disabled people in the UK want to work but cannot find employment. A recent survey of 200 senior directors by UnumProvident found that one in three felt the majority of employers, when considering two candidates of equal experience, would opt for a non-disabled candidate in preference to a disabled applicant, even if their disability was not a hindrance to performing the job.

UnumProvident corporate services director Joanne Hindle says: “Currently, 36 per cent of UK employers complain of staff shortages. We also estimate that the Government would benefit from an extra £5bn a year if 500,000 people came off incapacity benefit into work.”
