Unipass setting access standard

Technology standards body Origo says passwords and user names are becoming unnecessary for individual financial websites as the Unipass system becomes the standard for entering portals and providers&#39 extranets.

Friends Provident and Clerical Medical have just adopted Unipass. A total of 11 product providers and portals now accept Unipass. Origo says Friends and Clerical decided to use the system for entering portals due to its increasingly widespread use by the financial services industry and its benefits in ease of use and security.

The number of financial advisers using the system has reached almost 5,000. There are more than 20,000 people registered on the Friends and Clerical sites.

Unipass is funded by product providers and is free to IFAs. Origo says it gives advisers a secure, unique online identity that provides them with access to all the services they use online.

Clerical brand development manager Nathan McGurl says the system has been in place at the company for a few weeks and he is impressed with the take-up among IFAs.

He says: “A quarter of the IFAs accessing our extranet are using Unipass and we are already seeing the benefit.”

Friends director of marketing Graham Harvey says: “We expect 80 per cent of our UK IFA business to be carried out online within the next two years. Unipass will be a vital part of this transition, making life easier for IFAs and reducing the number of passwords they have to manage.”
