Unemployment falls to 2.43m

The total number of unemployed people fell by 88,000 over the last three months to reach 2.43m.

The fall marks the largest quarterly drop in unemployment since the three months to August 2000.

The number of people unemployed for up to a year also fell by 72,000 over the quarter to reach 1.60 million while the number of those unemployed for over a year also fell by 16,000 to stand at 829,000.

The fall in the last three months was largely thanks to the 16-24 age group, which saw unemployment fall by 79,000 over the quarter. The overall number of unemployed now stands at 895,000, the lowest figure since the three months to April 2009.
