Unbiased investigates ‘adviser phishing’ scam

Technology-Tablet-Computer-Tech-500x320.jpgUnbiased is investigating a potential scam which uses its directory service to target financial advisers to steal their data.

The emails have been sent to advisers through Unbiased, in an apparent phishing scam.

Informed Choice managing director Martin Bamford says IFAs have been approached by a supposed prospective client who sends advisers a link to click to access his financial documents. Advisers find the phone given by the individual does not work.

Bamford says that although he has not seen this through Unbiased before, it does look like other previous attempts to dupe advisers into giving their financial details away.

He says: “It looks similar to the [phishing email] scam we saw last year where you are told to click a link to download the client’s financial information.

“It was reported to Action Fraud at the time. It sounds like a new version of that one.”

An Unbiased spokesman says the company is looking into the issue and has some advice for anyone concerned:

“We’re aware of this fake email and are investigating. Security for both professionals and consumers is a top priority at Unbiased, and we encourage advisers to take the usual precautions when dealing with emails. For instance, always check that the sender’s email address matches the organisation concerned, and never click on attachments – Unbiased does not send invoices by email.

“Any professional who is concerned about an email’s authenticity should contact our team so that we can confirm whether it’s genuine or not.”

There has been a lot of focus on scammers targeting savers recently.

The Scam Smart campaign, a joint project between the FCA, and The Pensions Regulator, said its website saw a rise in visits of 462 per cent following an awareness raising campaign last summer.

The site allows people to compare pension fund options and find information on potential scams.

    A brilliant source of info for scammers, & CMC’s !

    Surely claims management companies need a client name first – even the most egregious CMC cannot simply write and ask for a claim to be investigated without a client name.

    As regards info for scammers – no more so than the FCA register, or our website.

    I’ll not enter a debate about the value of such directories, but I think their risks are minimal when one is already commercially active, and on the internet.
