UK unemployment rises to 2.56m

The number of people out of work rose by 70,000 to 2.56 million between December 2012 and February 2013, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.

The unemployment rate for December 2012 to February 2013 was 7.9 per cent of the economically active population, up 0.2 percentage points from September to November 2012.

The employment rate for those aged from 16 to 64 for December 2012 to February 2013 was 71.4 per cent. There were 29.70 million people in employment aged 16 and over.

The inactivity rate for those aged from 16 to 64 for December 2012 to February 2013 was 22.2 per cent, the lowest seen since 1991. This figure was down 0.2 percentage points from September to November 2012. There were 8.95 million economically inactive people aged from 16 to 64, down 57,000 from September to November 2012.
