UK unemployment falls to 2.45m

The unemployment rate in Britain fell by one percentage point to 7.7 per cent in the three months to August according to the Office for National Statistics.

Over the quarter the number of people out of work in Britain fell by 20,000 to reach 2.45m. However the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (the claimant count) increased by 5,300 between August and September, 2010, to reach 1.47m. This is the second consecutive month the number of claimants has increased.

Meanwhile the number of people in employment rose is up 241,000 on the year, but remains 270,000 than two years previously. The employment rate for those aged between 16-24 for the three months to August was 70.7 per cent, a rise of 0.2 percentage points over the quarter.
