Treasury appoints second permanent secretary

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has appointed Tom Scholar as second permanent secretary of the Treasury’s International and Finance directorate.

Chancellor Alistair Darling recommended the appointment of Scholar who is currently managing director of the International and Finance directorate.

Previously, Scholar was chief of staff and principal private secretary to the Prime Minister, 2007-8. From 2001 to 2007, he was executive director of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and Economic Minister at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C.

The appointment followed a Whitehall-wide competition chaired by a Civil Service Commissioner.
