Three independents win the votes for Standard bid

The three independent candidates for the Standard Life board have all achieved the 250 votes needed to be considered for election to the life office’s board.

Equitable Life members’ action group general secretary Paul Braithwaite, ex-banker Michael Hogan and pro-demutualisation campaigner David Stonebanks filed their nominations with Standard Life ahead of Monday’s deadline and are expected to be confirmed as official candidates by the end of the week. The life office is in the process of verifying their nominations with its legal department and says it will triple-check the forms.

Standard Life will mail the ballot sheets to its 2.6 million members next week. The packs will include 200-word statements of intent from the independent candidates and the six existing board members Standard Life is putting up for re-election at its forthcoming AGM. The election will follow the first-past-the-post format.

Standard Life marketing director Barry O’Dwyer says: “The question is whether all the nominations stand up and we have rigorous legal procedures in place to check them. If they are successful, they will be put on the ballot paper.”
