Thousands of Lloyds customers hit by data theft

Thousands of Lloyds Bank customers have had their personal details stolen following the theft of a data box.

The BBC reports that police from the Organised Crime Unit are investigating the theft on 30 July.

The data box was stolen from Royal Sun Alliance, which provides home insurance for Lloyds Premier Account customers.

Details taken included names, addresses, account numbers and sort codes, and relates to customers who opened accounts between 2006 and 2012 who made a claim on the insurance.

A spokesperson for RSA told the BBC: “We recognise this should never have happened and apologise to all customers who have been impacted.”

Accounts are not thought to be compromised at this stage as there is no evidence the data has been stolen by fraudsters. The insurer has offered to cover the £20 cost of two years’ worth of identity protection for extra security.

Lloyds has contacted all affected customers.
