The Wells Street Journal: Secret lives and mail fails

A weekly account of the curious goings-on in the world of financial services

The secret lives of Money Marketing columnists
WSJ knows that everyone has a hobby and was very impressed to discover that Money Marketing’s very own columnist Nic Cicutti is the owner of a bed and breakfast.

While Cicutti has shared anecdotes relating to his penchant for Northern soul music and riding scooters, the news about the B&B was a surprise to the Money Marketing office.

Much in the same fashion, WSJ only discovered last year that Investment Quorum former chief executive Lee Robertson is the proud writer of a food and restaurant review blog. WSJ also knows gbi2’s Graham Bentley is a dab hand at guitar and wants to know what else advisers get up to outside the office. Tweet your hobbies to @mm_wsj.

New year, new mail fail
Early last year, WSJ tracked a most amusing saga which unfolded on Twitter between Royal Mail and Yellowtail Financial Planning’s Dennis Hall over a missing parcel.

It seems 2019 has started out in similar fashion for Hall, who this time received a letter so damaged it came with an official Royal Mail apology note. The mail service’s Tweeters then informed Hall that compensation could only be claimed for the damaged item, rather than its potentially damaged contents. WSJ noticed on Twitter this week that Hall decided the only thing claimable was in fact an accompanying paperclip which had not been damaged.

WSJ hopes the letter didn’t contain a cheque for advice fees!

Tapering of annual allowance – adjusted and threshold income

The definitions of adjusted income and threshold income used to determine whether, and to what extent, someone’s annual allowance will be reduced can be confusing.  Here we try to make sense of it all.
