Taxman gets sums wrong

The Inland Revenue has been slammed for miscalculating millions of tax returns.

The Revenue&#39s target for accurate records and coding for self-assessment is 75 per cent, meaning at least one in four people can expect to be issued with an incorrect tax code.

Tax adviser Virtually Anywhere spokesperson Peter Back says: “When a taxpayer sends in a tax return, all the tax office does is take the figures and input them into the system that creates a tax bill.” Backs claims it will be easy for pressurised inspectors to enter incorrect figures.

The Revenue is claiming the real target is 94 per cent.
