Takeover choice splits IFAs

IFAs are split between a takeover of Abbey by Santander or HBOS.

Fifty-one per cent of IFAs say they would prefer Santander Central Hispano while 49 per cent support HBOS.

HBOS has yet to decide if it will make a formal bid for Abbey while Santander told IFAs last week it would be able to offer more to the market.

The survey was conducted on Money Marketing&#39s website www.moneymarketing. co.uk over the last week.

Some advisers would prefer Santander to come out on top as it would keep the Abbey brand in the mix and lead to more competition.

Savills Private Finance associate Tom Bland says: “I would swing towards Santander. HBOS is big enough already with respect to UK lending and making it even bigger would put more pressure on systems. I would prefer it if HBOS stays as it is.”
