Swiss Life puts its back into lumbar support

Swiss Life has linked up with national charity Back Care to tackle the problem of back pain which it estimates costs the UK economy over £5bn a year.

The life office has produced a 10-point charter for back care in response to back pain being the biggest single cause of absence from work, leading to sufferers making insurance claims and drawing sickness benefit.

Swiss Life says over 120 million working days are lost each year due to back problems. Fifteen per cent of sufferers are in pain throughout the year, of whom nearly 40 per cent consult a GP and 10 per cent visit a practitioner of complementary medicine. A third of sufferers say back pain restricts their daily lives.

Swiss Life believes it is important to understand the issues surrounding the management of back pain. Its charter sets out 10 points of best practice to prevent back problems and gives tips for post-injury rehabilitation.

It explains that back pain is an everyday occurrence affecting men and women of all ages. The charter goes on to tell employers to make workplaces as “back-friendly” as possible.

Swiss Life managing director Steve Burnett says: “The second-highest reason for a claim on an income protection policy is musculoskeletal, for example, a bad back.

“Swiss Life&#39s policy of differentiation means we seek partnerships that add value in terms of our product and overall service offering.”
