Straw urges firms to sue after £2m City riot

Home Secretary Jack Straw is urging City firms to sue rioters who caused £2m of damage in the City of London last Friday as a deterrent to similar demonstrators.

The City was brought to a standstill and plunged into chaos when 4,000 protesters turned violent during an anti-capitalist demonstration.

Tension was further fuelled by some City brokers who sprayed protesters with Champagne and waved gold credit cards. Others were seen throwing photocopied £50 notes out of their windows.

After good-natured campaigning in the morning, the demonstration turned ugly when protesters smashed up a McDonalds fast-food out let on Cannon Street and a Mercedes garage before blocking Tower Bridge by abseiling down it with a huge banner.

Some of the more unusual sights included a naked protester selling whistles for £to help banish the evils of capitalism and another demonstrator supergluing his forehead to the Bank of England.
