Smith & Williamson appoints Charles Deptford

Smith & Williamson Investment Management has announced the appointment of former New Star fund manager Charles Deptford.

Deptford is to take on the management of S&W’s UK equity growth and UK special situations trusts and will also assist Rupert Fleming on the UK long/short enterprise offshore fund.

Deptford, who managed the New Star UK equity income fund, was one of a number of managers not to join Henderson at the conclusion of the merger in April.

In addition to New Star, Deptford has also worked for the likes of Barings and also Rothschild Asset Management, where he was head of UK equities.

He says: “I’m excited to be joining Smith & Williamson at a key time in its development. The firm has a boutique approach to fund management which is refreshing and I am also looking forward to supporting Rupert Fleming on the Smith & Williamson UK long/short capability. Although these are undoubtedly challenging times for markets, I am delighted to be joining a business that is clearly looking to grow itself into a leading boutique player,”

S&W investment management director of marketing and sales Nick Hodgson says: “Charlie’s appointment underlines our commitment to grow the funds business. He is well known in the retail funds industry and has a wide following amongst intermediaries which will help us to raise the profile of Smith & Williamson in the coming years.”

UK platforms good to grow

The UK platform market has a higher potential for growth than the more established Australian market, even in the current market conditions, according to new entrant Macquarie.

Heights of sophistication

I am trying not to take this personally but here am I trying to stimulate a debate about whether or not we have of late been enjoying a bear market rally – one that will run out of steam and hit new lows – or the start of a new bull market and apparently there is no debate to be had at all.
