He joins from First State where he was manager of £19m British opportunities fund replacing former manager Mark Niznik, who left Standard Life in April to join Artemis.

Trenchard joins the firm as investment director and will report to the head of UK smaller companies Harry Nimmo.

Standard Life Investments is also looking at taking on the assets of the First State UK opportunities fund and although no decision has been made a spokesman for SLI the firm has said it is “distinct possibility.”

Standard Life Investments head of UK smaller companies Harry Nimmo says: “It’s great that Casper has decided to join Standard Life Investments. In a short time at First State he has built an enviable record of outperformance – having transformed the performance from bottom quartile to top quartile over three years.”
