Scottish Widows stakes its claim on pension market

However Pickard says: "Competition will come from those plans which adopt a stakeholder friendly stance, but which continue to offer access to a substantial fund range. Unfortunately, no particular product comes to mind here."

Commenting on the product literature Perdisatt says: "The literature is well produced, clear and easy to read, with good flow charts. The CD Rom included may also be of use."

Pickard thinks that the literature is good, but that there is too much of it, while Pack says: "The stakeholder pack is very good, being informative and helpful. It is the best that I have seen so far for a stakeholder product."

Summing the product up, Pickard says: "The product development is lagging behind the providers of previously registered schemes, who will therefore have an edge over Scottish Widows. The mutual providers also may be more popular."

Pack is cautious too. He says: "The market will develop a lot between April and October. This period will show the winners and the losers in the stakeholder world."
