Scot Prov pays 93% of CI claims

Scottish Provident paid out 93 per cent of all critical illness claims made between January and June this year, up six per cent on the same period last year.

The protection provider paid out over £43m during the first half of the year, with an average payout of £74,207.

Almost £30m was paid out for cancer claims and over £3.7m in claims for heart attacks.

Scottish Provident head of marketing Susan Barclay says: “We are committed to making the application and claims process on our critical illness policy as clear and simple as possible, and we believe today’s report is testament to this commitment.”

Aviva paid out almost £60m for 744 critical illness claims during the six months to end of June 2009, representing 89 per cent of all claims.

Enter the dragon

The latest series of Dragons’ Den is well into its stride and for me it is compulsive viewing. After each episode I think how I would pitch the typical financial advice model as a scaleable business but I am not hopeful of securing an investment.

Smoke signals

Smoking is bad for you. We all know that. So are lots of other things. Double egg and chips every day at the local greasy spoon, no exercise, too many biscuits and pies, crossing a busy road while daydreaming and plugged into your i-Pod… it is a long, perhaps endless list.

Three questions for employers…

The Family and Childcare Trust’s annual survey has been widely reported in the media and the two headline figures were these: the average cost of a nursery place for a child under two has risen by 33 per cent since 2010; and the costs have risen by five per cent in a single year.
