Schroders links with real estate specialist

Schroders has joined up with a New York-based real estate investment boutique to offer a global property securities fund.

The alliance with European Investors will see the fund made available through Schroders’ UK retail unit trust range and the Schroders International selection fund, a Luxemburg-domiciled Sicav, in the second or third quarter of this year.

European Investors has 18 years experience in managing specialist Reit portfolios in the US and internationally.

Schroders head of property William Hill says: “As the scale of property investment has grown, it is a natural progression for investors to look to international property markets to diversify risk. Our aim is to be at the forefront in providing investment products to meet this growing demand.”

Hargreaves Lansdown investment manager Ben Yearsley says: “If Schroders has not got the expertise to launch a global property fund on its own, it is fine to join up with these people but investors will be taking it on faith as to whether they are any good. The fund is likely to suffer from a lack of IFA knowledge as to whether global commercial property is a good idea.”
