Saga offers guide to annuities

Saga is publishing an annuity guide to help those approaching retirement through the maze of options.

It says as annuity rates fell by 12 per cent last year- the second-biggest decline in eight year – the choices that people make are especially critical.

The guide covers a variety of topics, including descriptions of the different types of annuities.

It discusses the right time to start choosing an annuity, which type may be appropriate and the open market option.

It also sets out alternatives to annuities and hints on the next steps that prospective annuitants can take.

Saga, which specialises in offering a wide range of services to the over-50s, ranging from holidays to financial services and a radio station, offers annuities on an execution-only basis through a tie-up with the Annuity Bureau. Saga&#39s customers avoid paying the bureau&#39s usual enquiry fee of £58.75.

She says she often thought her career would take her […]

Angry CA attack on panel&#39s &#39ivory tower&#39 Brown

The Consumers&#39 Association has launched a blistering attack on Financial Services Consumer Panel chairman Colin Brown, branding him “an ivory tower academic” for claiming that a complicated depolarised world will not necessarily be detrimental to consumers. The spat follows Brown disagreeing with criticisms from the CA that the FSA&#39s draft rules for depolarisation outlined in […]

MM: Has the time come for polarisation to end? MW: Polarisation was the right thing for 1988. At the time, there was no way of distinguishing between who was a broker and who was a tied salesman. Everyone had two business cards and called themselves whatever they wanted. The only way of brin-ging some order […]

Independent view

As I write this article, the FTSE 100 has just fallen below 3,500 and I am starting to wonder whether turning down the offer to be vocalist in a young Parisian snowboarder&#39s band back in 1993 was, in hindsight, a bad career move. The music business did not offer much in the way of job […]

In June 2016, immediately before the Brexit referendum, a curious thing happened. Despite the colossal uncertainty facing the UK, economic data actually started to come in above consensus forecasts. Citi’s economic surprise index nudged into positive territory, which meant that UK economic data had on the whole outperformed consensus forecasts over the prior three months. […]
