R&SA splits operation to create a direct arm

Royal & Sun Alliance is to split the branding of its intermediary and direct channels, with a new image and name for its direct arm.

The direct brand will aim to build on R&SA&#39s general insurance business although its long-term plans include offering life and pension products.

It will be run as a separate entity to its intermediary channel. R&SA says it remains committed to IFAs and currently carries out 85 per cent of its business through intermediaries. The new brand is aimed only at its 15 per cent of direct business.

The brand is being kept under wraps but may not include any reference to the R&SA name. It is set for launch later this year.

The news comes as speculation continues that R&SA is looking to sell off its life and pension business.

Aegon is understood to be leading the field to buy the business although a general insurer could also be interested in the book.

R&SA spokesman Jay Aitken says: “It will be a newly branded operation and in the long term will offer a full range of products. To start with, it will be drawing on our general business because that is where our real strengths in the overall group are. We are still very focused on the IFA channel.”
