Revival of regional exchanges set to boost IFA business

A planned revival of regional stock exchanges across the UK to

generate more investment in SMEs could bring new inv-estment business

for IFAs.

The exchanges, being set up by regional chambers of commerce and

regional development agencies, are set to target individual IFAs and

IFA networks as distribution channels to encourage local investment

in local businesses. There are plans to develop exchanges in

Birmingham, Manchester and the South-east.

The first regional exch-ange will be the West Mid-land Sharemark in

Birmingham. Having already secured RDA funding and chamber of

commerce backing, it will launch by the end of the year.

Private and public firms will be able to join the exchanges, which

will be listed online, for a fraction of the price of listing on the

Aim or the London Stock Exchange. Introduction to the Birmingham

exchange is likely to cost £5,000 compared with

£150,000-£250,000 to list on Aim.

Businesses looking to float on regional exchanges are also likely to

have the first call on Government public sector venture capital funds.

Similar online systems giving local companies a less exp-ensive way

to create a market in their shares already exist in Stuttgart and

Berlin.
