Rachel Reeves takes Shadow pensions role

Rachel Reeves has taken up the Shadow pensions brief as part of Labour leader Ed Miliband’s front bench reshuffle.

The MP for Leeds West will be responsible for holding pensions minister Steve Webb to account ahead of the coalition’s sweeping reform programme.

Reeves will report to Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Douglas Alexander.

She says: “It is a privilege to have been given a junior shadow ministerial role in Ed’s team. The massive changes to the system being introduced by the DWP must be implemented fairly – and I am determined to provide responsible opposition for this.”

Reeves has spent her professional career as an economist working for the Bank of England, the British Embassy in Washington and at Halifax Bank of Scotland.

She holds a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics, and a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from New College, Oxford.
