Peter Hargreaves climbs Rich List with £2.4bn wealth

Hargreaves Lansdown co-founder Peter Hargreaves has climbed the Sunday Times Rich List to number 39, with wealth valued at £2.39bn.

Hargreaves’ wealth has increased by £867m since last year’s Rich List, when he was ranked 47th richest person in the UK.

He set up Hargreaves Lansdown with Stephen Lansdown over 30 years ago with each putting in a £500 investment. Hargreaves now has a £2.24bn stake in the £6.8bn company.

Hargreaves received a CBE in this year’s New Year’s Honours list for services to business innovation, financial services and the city of Bristol, where the provider is based.

Other notable names in the latest Rich List include Bruno Schroder and family, ranked number 32 with a wealth of £2.87bn. He is a non-executive director at Schroders, and the family has a stake in the asset management firm worth £2.52bn.

Founder of Odey Asset Management Crispin Odey and his wife Nichola Pease are ranked number 193, with a fortune valued at £520m. Pease picked up £26m for her stake in JO Hambro Capital when it was sold, where she was deputy chairman.

Now retired from fund management, Roger Guy played a key role in the buyout of Gartmore. He is worth £200m.

Resolution founder Clive Cowdery is worth £150m. He sold the assets of the group for £5bn in 2008 before reforming the business. He is leaving the group, in which he has a £30m stake, to work on American projects.

Andy Bell is ranked the 639th richest person in the UK, down from 608th place last year. He co-founded the AJ Bell platform.

Philip Beresford, who has compiled the Rich List since 1989, said: “I’ve never seen such a phenomenal rise in personal wealth as the growth in the fortunes of Britain’s 1,000 richest people over the past year.

“The richest have had an astonishing year, and while some may criticise them, many of these people are at the heart of the economy and their success brings more jobs and more wealth for the country.”
