Owen reins in Defence Union’s aggressive approach

The IFA Defence Union is looking to shed its militant tag with a rebrand and increased focus on training.

Evan Owen plans to change the name to the IFA Defence and Development Union.

Owen, who has consistently argued that the financial services regulatory regime violates EU human rights law, says he is looking to quash widespread misconceptions of him in the market.

He says he will maintain his uncompromising stance against the FSA but will rein in the aggressive tone of his correspondence, which prompted the regulator to block his emails last year.

The rebrand is also designed to reflect an increased focus on training. Owen hopes to set up an online training course for advisers and says he is in negotiations with a network and provider to fund the initiative.

Owen says: “Unlike what most people think, I am not an egotist and am not barking mad. I want to tone it down and put things across in a less aggressive way but my views about the FSA and industry will not change.

“Advisers do not have time to go around attending seminars or paying for FSA courses to tell them what the rules are.”

Equity-release providers have hit back after their products came under fire from Which? claims of being too expensive and misleadingly advertised. But leading industry figures insist that the research […]

Advisers must justify charges

I was interested to read Nick Bamford’s comments on fees versus commission (Money Marketing, December 15.) The fact that IFAs have traditionally earned their income from commission on the products they sell has left some people with the perception that IFA services are free of charge. However, with many IFAs now moving towards a fee-based […]
