NYSE may not open until Monday

The New York Stock Exchange will stay closed for trading today and may not open until Monday as the damage to its trading capabilities is assessed.

The Exchange is closed because of damage to its telecommuncations systems rather than structural damage to buildings.

Markets in the Far East stabilised, with the Nikkei closing virtually unchanged at 9,613. The FTSE was slightly up in morning trading, although trading volumes were below half their usual levels worldwide as many fund managers suspended trading.
