N&P offers £5k prize for self-builders

Ecology-sensitive self-builders can win £5,000 by incorporating energy-saving features in their new home.

Norwich and Peterborough Building Society is offering the prize to the self-built property that is the most environmentally friendly on location, construction, type and value.

The competition is not restricted to N&P customers but is open to the 20,000 people who build their own homes each year. Judges will look for properties built on brownfield sites, recycling systems that reuse household water, super-efficient insulation and double-glazing and energy-saving central heating systems.

Since July 2000, N&P has been offering a carbon-neutral mortgage to offset damage done to the environment by the average property. As part of the loan over five years N&P will plant 40 trees to absorb the carbon dioxide emissions produced by the average household.

General manager, residential mortgages Stephen Penlington says: “The competition has attracted a great deal of interest from self-builders and environmental agencies.

Our aim is to raise awareness that including more energy-efficient features in housebuilding is really an option for major developers and individuals alike. This prize is a big pat on the back for people caring enough about the environment to make an effort.”
