New Star offers Fof guidance

New Star has produced a plain English guide to funds of funds in an effort to reduce investor confusion over some of the terminology used.

The guide says good performance alone is a poor way of selecting funds. It examines strategies adopted by multi-managers, discusses fund charges and explains terms such as multi-manager, manager of managers, fettered and unfettered portfolios.

The guide emphasises that fund of funds products can be used to diversify investment risk and limit the paperwork for investors. It is available free to private investors and financial advisers.

Fund of funds manager Mark Harris says: “Most investors and their advisers do not have the time to manage their portfolios. We do that for them on a full-time basis, working out what the overall investment strategy should be and pinpointing those managers with the appropriate track records and approach. We aim to find the optimum balance between risk and returns at all times.”
