A manager at Legal & General has been sacked for earning money as a magician while being paid sick leave by the insurer.
Resource planning manager Peter Hopkins was dismissed for gross misconduct after he was found to have performed at a children’s birthday party in April last year as “Mr Hocus Pocus”.
An L&G colleague also at the party spotted Hopkins, who had been off work for six months due to stress, and reported him.
At an employment tribunal in Cardiff Hopkins said his doctor had encouraged him to perform as it would help overcome his stress-related illness.
A Legal & General spokesperson says: “As an employer we’re simply following the rules. It is never nice for someone to lose their job but Hopkins had had a warning and had done it again. It is not a great example to other staff. I believe we have behaved as most employers would have.”
