MPs warn UK will get no special treatment from EU

Prime minister David Cameron

MPs will today warn EU member states are unlikely to allow the UK to repatriate powers from Brussels as part of negotiations to stay in the single market.

The Financial Times reports the Commons foreign affairs committee will say it is sceptical that Britain will get special treatment from EU member states.

While the committee is supportive of prime minister David Cameron’s aim to agree a new deal with Europe if re-elected in 2015, it believes this is more likely to succeed if he pursues reform across the EU as a whole, rather than fighting for UK-centric changes.

The FT reports the committee will say: “The Government could not successfully demand ‘any price’ for promising to try to keep the UK in the union.”

Chairman Richard Ottaway will say: “Reform and renegotiation in the EU takes time and is often complex and difficult. It is important for everyone in the UK to understand that we are involved in a collective process with 26 other countries [27 when Croatia joins on July 1], whether we are trying to reform a single piece of EU legislation or leave the EU.”

The committee will not comment on whether the UK should stay in the single market or not, but will advise the Government to remain “constructive, engaged and thinking in terms of the EU as a whole”.

  1. “UK will get no special treatment from EU”

Who wants special treatment? I’d settle for equal treatment honestly.

  2. special treatment?
an unfortunate term of phrase when speaking of Europe.

  3. I’d be happy if the other 25 countries took as much notice of the european laws that Brussels dreams up as we do.

    Oh for a fair world…………………….
