Miliband promotes Rachel Reeves to Shadow cabinet

Labour leader Ed Miliband has promoted Rachel Reeves to Shadow Treasury chief secretary.

Reeves (pictured) was previously Shadow pensions minister. It is not yet clear who will replace the MP for Leeds West in this role.

Reeves replaces Angela Eagle, who has been named as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons. A further five of the party’s 2010 intake – Chuka Umunna, Stephen Twigg, Liz Kendall, Margaret Curran and Michael Dugher – have also been promoted to the Shadow cabinet.

Miliband says: “I am determined that my Shadow cabinet not only holds this Government to account but speaks to the public and the country.

“My decision to appoint half-a-dozen members of the 2010 intake shows the talent that Labour has and the way in which this new generation can join us in taking Labour’s agenda forward.”
