MFS makes UK debut

MFS International UK, a subsidiary of Boston-based fund management firm MFS Investment Management, has made its debut in the UK retail market.

The MFS UK equity fund is one of three Oeics that have been introduced because the company is expanding across Europe. It will consist of a portfolio of between 20 and 35 UK stocks, which will be selected by a team of eight analysts. The team, headed by Anthony Kingsley, currently manages the Luxemburg-based European equity fund for MFS.

With the UK equity fund, each analyst will cover two or three sectors and will use a bottom-up approach to pitch their best ideas for the portfolio. The analysts will manage up to 24 sectors between them and will look for stocks that look undervalued or have good growth potential. Every 18 months, the analysts will swap sectors to give them experience of managing different areas.

UK funds are popular with investors at the moment as the economy remains strong and this fund could be well placed to take advantage of any move towards an upswing in share prices. However, there are many UK funds which consist of concentrated portfolios and the MFS fund will have to compete with those in terms of quality research.

According to Standard & Poor&#39s, the MFS European equity fund is ranked 28 out of 285 funds based on £1,000 invested on a bid-to-bid basis with gross income reinvested over one year to December 21, 2001.
