Metro Bank chairman to step down

Metro Bank co-founder and chairman Anthony Thomson is to step down from his role in December.

Thomson helped set up the bank in September 2007, with Vernon Hill, ahead of its launch in July 2010.

He also founded the Financial Services Forum in July 2000.

A replacement has not yet been found from Thomson and his replacement will be announced by January 2013.

Thomson says: “The past five years helping to build Metro Bank has been the most exciting and enjoyable in my 30 years of business life. I am confident that the board, executive team and my other colleagues at the bank will continue to build upon the vision that Vernon and I first had back in 2007, to revolutionise banking in the UK. I plan on taking a break then continuing to develop my various business and philanthropic interests.”

The bank plans to float on the London stock exchange in 2014. In June, Money Marketing revealed the bank was looking to offer its mortgages via intermediaries. Later that month it announced a pilot scheme to offer mortgages via brokers for borrowers in London and the South East.
