Mervyn King receives a knighthood

Bank of England governor Mervyn King received a knighthood in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

King, who has been governor of the Bank of England since 2003,  was attacked by Labour in the run-up to last year’s general election for appearing to support the Conservatives’ economic proposals.

The upcoming restructure of financial services regulation, with responsibility for prudential regulation switching from the FSA to the Bank, will give significant new powers to King.

Standard Chartered chairman John Peace also received a knighthood.
