Labour MEP for the South-east Peter Skinner has criticised Treasury financial secretary Mark Hoban’s use of rhetoric after he called on the industry to help “kill dead” the mortgage credit directive.
Hoban made the call for the industry to lobby Europe at a recent Cicero Consulting event in London.
Skinner says ministers need to be careful because it is easy to lose influence in Europe. He says: “My advice to Mark Hoban and others is play the game properly. If you want to take a haymaker-type swing at Europe for political reasons and then come to Brussels and convince
people this is the way it should be done, then I am afraid most people here will be quite against that. You do not want to start playing the antagonistic game and say you are here to sweep all the changes aside without necessarily having the friends around you that you need.”
