Medicash plan offers tax-free sum

Healthcare provider Medi-cash has set up a healthcare cash plan which pays patients a tax-free lump sum when they undergo surgery which requires a general anaesthetic.

The Essential Surgery plan pays policyholders up to £6,000 tax-free each time a general anaesthetic is administered for life-threatening operations and varying amounts for less serious surgery such as hip replacements or teeth removal.

Medicash says the money can supplement lost earnings, fund convalescence care, care at home or source NHS or private individual treatment.

One claim is permitted a year and treatment for pre-existing conditions are restricted. The plan covers chronic conditions requiring surgery but not procedures such as cosmetic enhancement.

Chief executive Bill Gay-wood says: “With 20 million people in this country without individual healthcare provision, there is a huge market for this plan.

“Our customers will buy it as an additional benefit, as will people who may switch from a more expensive and restrictive private insurance.”
