Matrix secures health VCT

Matrix Securities has designed a venture capital trust (VCT) that will invest in companies that are springing up in the healthcare sector.

The Sitka health VCT will take advantage of the trend towards healthy lifestyles and scientific breakthroughs in medicine. Companies in this field that are in their emerging stages will be chosen depending on their growth potential.

During the first three years of the investment period, the money raised by the share subscriptions will go into fixed interest securities. It will then go into unquoted companies at different stages of development, including those listed on Aim and Ofex.

The growth prospects of the healthcare sector are good, but it tends to be dominated by established companies which are looking to buy developing companies that are going places. The stringent tests involved in marketing new drugs means that licensing can be a problematic process and this could be an obstacle for new comers.

Investors who are keen to take a gamble in this area and who find the tax advantages of VCTs appealing could find this worthwhile. But clients who do not have much spare cash could be put off by the risks involved.
