The Marlborough UK micro cap fund aims for income and growth by focusing mainly on smaller companies with a market capitalisation of less than £50m.

Willis Own head of communications Kerry Nelson thinks this has the ingredients to be a good performing fund. She says: “This will offer specific exposure to the micro-cap market and will be of particular appeal to investors with a well diversified portfolio.”

In what is considered to be a flat market moving forward, Nelson believes those fund managers that add value through a stockpicking process will prove to be an essential ingredient in an investors&#39 portfolio. She says: “What will add to the appeal in this instance is the fund manager&#39s proven expertise in this area and ability to pick stocks and ultimately add value.” In Nelson&#39s view the literature is straightforward and the commission is level with mainstream funds in the UK.

However, Nelson points out that it will have quite a limited appeal to the wider investment market. She adds: “I can see this fund being more popular with discretionary managers, possibly fund of fund managers and high-net-worth individuals.”

Nelson also feels this fund will not be a significant seller in the current environments, which has had many ups and downs. She feels many investors have become more cautious and that there is definitely a flight to safety &#45 or perceived safety in investors&#39 eyes.
