London stocks push higher

The FTSE 100 made a strong start this morning opening up at 4,399 with miners pushing the index higher.

London equities were nudged 1.5 per cent higher by 9.38am to 4,454 with help from mining stocks which led strong gains. By 1.17pm it had held up gains at 4,453.

Rio Tinto was up 13.1 per cent to 3,076p, while BHP Billiton lifted 9.8 per cent to 1,598p.

Meanwhile banks remained positive with Barclays up 5.2 per cent to 279.75p, Lloyds Banking Group up 0.2 per cent to 67.2p and Royal Bank of Scotland up 0.3 per cent to 37.30p.
