Julian Adams replaces Sheila Nicoll as FSA director of retail firms

Julian Adams is to replace Sheila Nicoll as FSA director of retail firms.

Nicoll is moving to become director of conduct policy overseeing the implementation of the retail distribution review, replacing Dan Waters, and both will take up their new roles at the start of October.

Adams joined the FSA in1998 from the Bank of England and has held a number of roles at the regulator including head of wholesale insurance firms.

He currently heads up the department that supervises the major retail UK banks and was also responsible for the implementation of the supervisory enhancement programme within his department.

Adams is a representative on the international Senior Supervisors’ Group and the Basel Committee Standards Implementation Group.

FSA retail managing director Jon Pain says: “I am delighted to announce this appointment today.

“Julian has been outstanding in dealing with some of the issues that the banking sector has faced in the last couple of years and has played a key role in implementing our more intensive supervision model for major firms.”

“Julian has been outstanding in dealing with some of the issues that the banking sector has faced in the last couple of years” But evidently not the really big ones, though, eh? Given the degree to which the FSA regulates the banks, this sounds like a decidedly cushy number. I’ll bet the salary’s huge as well. Nice work if you can get it.

There they go again re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic!

  3. Which Julian are you talking about?
“Julian has been outstanding in dealing with some of the issues that the banking sector has faced in the last couple of years” – This could also apply to me… I work for a ‘big’ Bank and this statement is spot on. However, it’s certainly not a cushy number and I just wish the salary was huge… Julian Adams

  4. Step Change ?
Now I wonder if Julian Adams will deal with the retail firms in the same easy going manner as he appears to have done with the banks or maybe, just maybe, he will go for the jugular of those retail firms as seems to be the customary practice. Surely not?
