Interactive offers spread betting

Interactive Investor has launched a spread-betting service to enable gamblers to have a flutter on financial markets.

The online investment service has developed a spread-betting account that has a minimum stake of 50p across a wide range of markets.

It also offers an eight-week online course designed to educate users on spread betting, from the fundamentals to the in-depth mechanics of trading.

Investors will be emailed weekly course notes and during the eight weeks will be able to bet on most markets with stakes from 1p per point.

This will let them experience spread betting on a live system while limiting their financial risks. The minimum stake will rise to 50p per point on internet trades after the course. Risks can be limited with stop-losses and there is a helpline.

Chief executive officer Tomas Carruthers says: “The biggest emphasis is on education first and trading second via the spread-betting academy. This is the only sensible approach to the risks.”

Dickson Lishman Prince partner Richard Lishman says: “Spread betting is only good if you really understand financial markets, just like gambling. If you do not understand it, then your best other option is to go down the casino and put all your cash on red or black.”
