IFAs warned of dangers in ignoring structured products

IFAs are ignoring structured products at their peril, says SG Hambros head of product development Peter Gardner.

Gardner says many IFAs do not sell structured products because they do not und-erstand them and are not willing to undertake the training required.

He says: “The reputation was tarnished with precipice bonds but structured products will continue to be used by specialists. They will be ignored at IFAs’ peril.”

But Equal Partners director Kevin Tooze says he does not see the need for structured products, saying that IFAs should be able to recommend other products offer- ing the same benefits without the restrictions.

Tooze says: “Structured products are far more complex than they need to be.”

SG Hambros chief investment officer Andrew Popper says structured products are a valid alternative to hedge funds, which he says are too risky and expensive.
