HSBC to rename UK retail arm

HSBC plans to change the name of its ring-fenced UK retail banking arm as part of an overhaul that will see 8,000 jobs slashed.

The Telegraph reports the bank, which employs 26,000 staff in the UK, plans to change the name of its branch network once it has been legally split from its global operations.

This will see the HSBC brand and logo disappear from Britain’s high streets.

Speaking at an investor day, HSBC chief executive Stuart Gulliver said: “We will operate with a different brand name, we haven’t decided what it is, we’re going to consult with customers and staff.”

The news comes on the same day HSBC confirmed 25,000 jobs will be slashed in a global cost-cutting drive, including 8,000 roles in the UK.

The bank is also considering relocating its global headquarters away from the UK.

Nick Bamford: Ucis scams shake my optimism

This morning my grandson Barnaby asked me a typical question for a six-year- old: “Grandad, how many days have you been working?” A quick calculation came up with a figure running into many thousands. 1. A bit like renaming Windscale – Sellafield

  2. If they’re after suggestions, ‘Small enough to fail’ has a certain ‘Ronseal’quality to it….

  3. The Bank of Tax Avoiding, Money Laundering, PPI Mis-selling, Libor & Forex Rigging, FCA & US Authority fined heavily R Us. – “The bank where the executive bonus comes first!”

I think that will catch on!

If anyone at HSBC wants to use my creative genius I am available at competitive rates.

  4. How about calling it Midland Bank.

  5. David, genius. Where did you conjure that up from?

I think the continuation of the name in the UK should reflect their input morally and socially so a combination of 3 other brands should represent it perfectly Total- FCUK-UPS.

  7. Agree David and Neil.
For an advertising slogan/song ‘come and talk to the listening bank’ and a nice yellow griffin for a logo.
    sorted!

HSBC position themselves as a global bank so is this changing globally or is this the first stage of a move to potentially sell/split the Uk retail banking arm by braking with the brand?

  9. The no messing bank.

Sure we made some messes in the past, but hey who doesn’t from time to time. However if your regulator And press messes with us much more 8,000 job losses in the UK will be the tip of the iceberg. We will just leave the U K alltogether.

  10. No money? No prospects? Then get lost. The Frank Bank…
