HSBC in part-time deal

HSBC has now agreed terms with banking union Unifi to compensate around 2,000 part-time staff who were denied pension rights back dated to 1976.

Only current employees or those who have left within six months are entitled to claim. Unifi is in talks with a further 25 financial institutions including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds TSB to settle compensation claims for part-time workers.

The talks follow a House of Lords ruling in February 2001 on the issue and more compensation payouts are expected.
