Home & Capital Trust takes positive approach over age discrimination

Equity-release company Home & Capital Trust has been praised by the Department for Work and Pensions&#39 Age Positive campaign for promoting employment rights for people aged over 50.

The Bedford-based company says it is one of a handful of firms selected as a “champion” by Age Positive, which tackles age discrimination in the work-place.

It sets out best practice guidelines for recruitment, training and development, promotion, redundancy and retirement.

Home & Capital claims to appreciate the benefits of employing older people as the average age of its employees is 53, and of six new staff who joined last year, 55 was the average. It says two of its 20 employees are pensioners and 44 per cent are over 55.

It says from its experience it has found older employees are normally meticulous in attendance and timekeeping and have a better than average record on sick leave.

It says employees over 60 are still being promoted and there are no fixed retirement ages, which it says shows good treatment of older people.

Director and general manager Andrew Randall says: “We value the talents of mature staff who can empathise with our elderly customers.”
