Hazell Carr chief runs in Sahara to aid rhino cause

Pension consultancy Hazell Carr is offering free benefit reviews to firms if they sponsor director Kenneth Donaldson in his bid to run across the Sahara desert.

Donaldson will be taking part in the Marathon des Sables to raise money for the Save the Rhino International charity.

The marathon, which is described as the toughest foot race on Earth, takes place in the Sahara desert around the Moroccan town of Ouarzazate from April 6-12.

Donaldson will be running with a team of seven others who will take it in turns to wear a 7ft rubber rhino suit weighing 30lbs to complete the race.

Competitors must carry all their own kit and food for the week. The 230km race is split into six stages which includes a full marathon and a non-stop stage, with runners covering 80km in under 40 hours.

The race is so tough that many entrants fail to finish as temperatures range from 125 degrees during the day to below freezing at night over terrain that varies from rocky plains to sand dunes.

Firms will have to donate a minimum of £1,000 to Save the Rhino to get a benefit review. The normal review cost is between £2,000 and £5,000.

Donaldson says: “We have a moral obligation to ensure these animals are not completely destroyed in one generation, so if it means enduring mile after mile of knee-pounding misery to raise money for such a worthy cause, I am prepared to do it.”
