Halifax in poaching row

Halifax has been accused of trying to poach clients by financial adviser Keith Miles.

The Monmouthshire Financial Services sole trader has accused Halifax of “thinking it is above the law” because it continued to contact his clients after being told not to do so.

The Burns-Anderson member says he submitted online mortgage applications for clients who were then contac-ted by Halifax general insurance services even though he had not granted them permission to do so.

Miles says in April he was categorically told none of his clients would be contacted but within 48 hours of sub- mitting recent applications, several had been sent mar- keting material regarding ASU insurance.

Miles says: “I cannot understand why this company emp-loys managers who think they are above the law. In my view, they are breaking the Data Protection Act. They said it was because they needed to know the house was being insured, but this is nonsense.”

HBOS General Insurance manager public relations Lucy Cooke says: “We are very sorry that Mr Miles has had reason to complain to us. It is our responsibility as a diligent lender to contact customers to ensure that insurance is in place or is going to be arran-ged by themselves or the broker. We have spoken to Mr Miles and agreed that we will in the future no longer con- tact his clients.”
