Halifax came to the rescue of Equitable Life and its embattled policyholders this week with a £1bn takeover deal.

The move is being seen by financial analysts as a shrewd move as it will give Clerical Medical a firm footing in the stakeholder market backed by Equitable&#39s state of the art admin systems.
